Just a reminder that transport media swabs and blood tubes, especially EDTA and citrate, should only be used within their expiry dates. Using them past this time can negatively impact on sample integrity and results.
We’ve recently received a few swabs that have been sent in expired transport media. Transport media swabs should only be used if the media still moist. If it is no longer moist, it will be completely unsuitable for ensuring viability of bacteria for culture.
EDTA and citrate blood tubes should also only be used within their expiry date. There is a small window outside this date so call your local laboratory for confirmation.
